For some, the music means to walk through the vinyl shops looking for a limited edition of favorite album, means to quote lyrics from songs less popular in the middle of a conversation. Of course, in everyday life, such people can be annoying. But when they appear in movies, it's hard to resist them. Therefore, today I made a top ten of the characters from movies that can be called music nerds.
10. The Boat That Rocked
The Boat That Rocked, a film often overlooked, tells the story of Britain's clandestine radio of the 60′s and the enormous passion of people working for them and those who listened. Therefore, it is hard to choose from Rock Radio team just one character. Each is incredibly dedicated to music. But the most fanatical of all is The Count, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. It is so consumed by his love for music that is able to go down with the ship for one more last song.
09. Adventureland
Jesse Eisenberg is not very far from the nerd character in real life: A Woody Allen's new generation of actors, is obsessed of musicals and is talking too fast. The roles in films such as The Social Network and The Squid and The Whale fit him perfectly. If in the two movies, his character was pretentious and gave the impression that knows everything (in The Squid and The Whale even has the audacity to say that he wrote Hey You by Pink Floyd), James Brennan is a big change. Passionate about music, Lou Reed, Husker Du and The Replacements in particular, is one of the nicest nerds that ever hit the big screen.
08. (500) Days of Summer
Summer Finn, played by Zooey Deschanel, is any indie rocker's fantasy. The pretty girl from the office that recognizes the song that you listening on headphones and she loved it. But what makes her come into the category of true passion is not only that is a huge fan The Smiths, but her cat's name (Bruce from Springsteen), she used to sing Lee Hazlewood at karaoke. I add to all this as a reference at Sid&Nancy when she breaks up with Tom.
07. Nick And Norah's Infinite Playlist
From Juno to Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, Michael Cera plays enough characters that have a special connection with music. The role of Nick, the only heterosexual member of a band of queercore, Cera makes perfect mixtapes, and is a fan of fictional indie legends Where's Fluffy still willing to spend the night in search of where they support a secret concert.
06. Juno
Is true that, in the life of a teenager, the music is very important. But not many pregnant girls sit and talk about their favorite bands. Juno, played by Ellen Page, is less interested in vitamins and other things related to pregnancy than that is her favorite band (can not choose between The Stooges, Patti Smith and The Runaways).
05. The School of Rock
Like many movie on this list, Jack Black is not a novice when we talk about music obsessions, but his role as Dewey Finn is a true master of fanaticism. He is not able to stick with his band work, but when it comes to learn all he can know about rock, Dewey unleashed his knowledges on his students.
04. High Fidelity
John Cusack gives life to Rob Gordon, the center of a film full of musical elitism. The music shop owner, defines the other depending on musical tastes, their albums organized alphabetically lists related to music is everywhere, his favorite book is Johnny Cash's autobiography and has only praise for Stereolab and The Beta Band. In addition, his philosophy of life is perfectly defining for any music geek: "what really matters is what you like, not what you are like".
03. American Psycho
Yes, Paterick Bateman is a serial killer. But when he is not running his victims with an ax, Bateman say one of the most bizarre monologues possible. Completely seriously, discuss alone about the hidden genius of Whitney Houston and Huey Lewis and how Genesis with Phil Collins as leader made epic albums. As a piece of trivia, Bateman has a song written about him, b-side of the same name from the Manic Street Preachers.
02. Almost Famous
In essence, the fictional version of the director (and former music journalist) Cameron Crowe, William Miller, played by Patrick Fugit is a kid of 16 who comes to live music geek's dream. Following a theme from the Rolling Stone, Miller has to go on tour in Stillwater, with free access everywhere. Although is a little shy, have clear opinions about music, such as Lou Reed is trying to be Bowie with new songs.
01. SLC Punk
SLC Punk is one of the movies that anyone passionate about music must see it. Stevo, played by Matthew Lillard, is a purist's punk that does not support those who poses in real punks. Throughout the film, while his best friend Bob is looking for love, Stevo focus on things that are really important: anarchist philosophy, how to not live your life by the lyrics.
