There's about a month left before fall lineups are revealed, and Fox is slowly eliminating its areas of uncertainty. On Monday, the network announced that its entire Tuesday lineup – Glee, New Girl, and Raising Hope – will return in September.
Two-thirds of this news came as no surprise. Now in its third season, Glee has lost a lot of ground with critics and with many adult viewers, but it is still the top-rated scripted series on television among teenagers. The Zooey Deschanel star vehicle New Girl does even better than Glee in the key 18-49 demographic, so the announcement of a second season was no surprise. However, despite a generally good reception among critics, Raising Hope was a bit of an upset to come back a year ago and fared only slightly better in its second season. Pairing it with a genuine hit in New Girl gave the show the small boost it needed to survive.
Said Fox programming chief Kevin Reilly, "Over the past season, New Girl has become the hottest new appointment series for young adults, Raising Hope has established itself as one of the smartest and most unique offbeat comedies on television, and Glee has continued its success as a genre-defying, global cultural phenomenon … All three of these comedies add a fresh and distinctive flavor to our Tuesday nights, and I'm really happy to bring them back to our air next season."
The big decisions remaining for Fox are the futures of the perennially low-rated Fringe and the promising newcomer Touch; and deciding which sitcom pilots will make the grade, since the network is expected to pick up at least two for the fall lineup.
