Mike Ryan: 'SNL' Scorecard: SofSia Vergara Wins The Battle Of ...
Apr 8th 2012, 17:55

My biggest takeaway from the Sofia Vergara hosted "Saturday Night Live" is that, boy, Sofia Vergara certain does like to yell. And she's utterly gifted during doing so. Vergara is so gifted during yelling that final night she even had the appetite to by-pass the volume environment on my television. Vergara was better than expected, if, for no other reason, the show put her in easy situations. (Hence the yelling, we suppose.) Oh, and Gilly was back. But there is good news, as visitor Kate McKinnon, eventually, had a flattering decent entrance episode. After a month's hiatus, it's time for a unequivocally shrill Scorecard.

Sketch of the Night

"Almost Pizza" (Kristen Wiig, Bill Hader, Nasim Pedrad) The usually thing that we didn't like about "Almost Pizza" is that we never found out what Almost Pizza indeed is. Is it an alien? If it is an alien, it now lives underneath that family's refrigerator. What's the resolution to that? Would an exterminator be called? The best partial was Hader, who can somehow still do the "I'm a father in a commercial" voice even in an indignant tone.

Score: 8.0

The Good

"Bein' Quirky" (Abby Elliott, Taran Killam, Kristen Wiig, Sofia Vergara, Andy Samberg, Fred Armisen) we enjoyed "Bein' Quirky" the initial time it aired during the Zooey Deschanel hosted episode. And we enjoyed this version, too. OK, let me rephrase: we was enjoying it until Sofia Vergara's Fran Drescher showed up. Good lord, what was that? It's as if Vergara asked, "So, how do we do a Fran Drescher impression?" And she was told, "Oh, only yell. As shrill as we can. It will be great." (Also: How is Fran Drescher "quirky"? ) Though, thankfully, the mass of Killam's Michael Cera canceled out all of that nonsense.

Score: 7.5

"Pantene Commercial" (Sofia Vergara, Kate McKinnon, Jason Sudeikis, Bobby Moynihan) It's wise that there was a blueprint that featured Sofia Vergara filming a commercial, because, in reality, she spends a lot of her time doing only that. This time, she gets a lot of easy lines while McKinnon's Penelope Cruz gets the formidable lines. You see, they both have accents. Just essay that out, it creates me wish to tremble — but, for whatever reason, it worked. Also: It's good to see McKinnon get a starring role during her initial show. (Backstage, Jay Pharoah had to be seeking himself, "Seriously?")

Score: 7.0

"Watch What Happens Live" (Taran Killam, Sofia Vergara, Nasim Pedrad, Kenan Thompson, Andy Samberg, Kate McKinnon) Killam is channeling his best Paul Lynn for his Andy Cohen impression. So, we wonder what I'm meditative about this if I'm Cohen. On one hand, it's a good pointer that I'm applicable adequate to have an whole blueprint formed on my speak show. So, that's a good thing! On the other hand: This was a sincerely relentless conflict for being a narcissist. So, that's a bad thing. Maybe call it even? (For the record, we tend to like Cohen, formed on zero some-more than the fact the he's a St. Louis Cardinals fan.)

Score: 6.8

"News Team Promo" (Fred Armisen, Jason Sudeikis, Sofia Vergara, Bill Hader) Hope Hines is carrying a tough time filming his internal news promo commercial. Good lord, I'm a fool for Fred Armisen's code of individualist humor. And his name is "Hope." Good lord, I'm a fool for the names that Armisen comes adult with for his characters. And it doesn't harm that we find the judgment of internal news promos humorous on their own. Look, there's zero new here: This is distant from the initial time this judgment has been finished (something identical was aired during the Channing Tatum episode), yet we laughed. What can we say?

Score: 6.5

"Cold Open: Mitt Romney" (Jason Sudeikis, Ensemble) Mitt Romney panders. Again. I'll admit, we wasn't enjoying this until Mitt Romney found himself in East St. Louis, IL. As someone who grew adult opposite the stream from that place, yeah, that unequivocally is nobody's favorite place. And we did giggle when Romney gave his "Hey, New York, let's start the show" introduction since that sounds like how Romney would start the show. And I've pronounced this before: Sheesh, what a tedious election. (Somewhere, in an swap universe, Chris Christie is using for boss and, right now, we are still shouting about Bobby Moynihan's latest portrayal.)

Score: 6.3

"Hunger Games" (Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, Sofia Vergara, Jay Pharoah, Taran Killam, Nasim Pedrad, Abby Elliott) we found this disappointing. For no other reason then, for of all "The Hunger Games" associated sketches that could have been done, this was it? Sofia Vergara as sideline reporter? And as the final blueprint of the night? we mean, we get yet another Mitt Romney blueprint and "The Hunger Games" is an afterthought. They did such a good pursuit with the costumes and makeup; we only wish a small some-more time had left into the grounds of the sketch. Even so, it still deserved better than the final blueprint of the night.

Score: 6.0

The Bad

"Weekend Update" (Seth Meyers, Bobby Moynihan) Well, that was … brisk. If we weren't idle and this wasn't Sunday morning, we competence go behind and check to see if that was the shortest "Update" this season — yet I'm only going to go forward and assume that it was. we do suffer Moynihan's Drunk Uncle, yet we adore it some-more when "Update" fires on all cylinders. Let me use another seared analogy: we adore it when "Update" feels like a well-oiled machine. Or when it feels like a playground right in the center of the show. This only felt like Meyers wanted it over as fast as possible. we theory they indispensable to cut time somewhere so that "Lil' Poundcake" could atmosphere for a third(!) time.

Score: 5.8

"Sofia Vergara Monologue" (Sofia Vergara) we suspect this was… fine? To be honest, we immediately forgot flattering most all she pronounced the second it was over, yet it was short. So that's a plus. And that's not a hit on Vergara; it's some-more the fact that if her digression is going to essentially include of her revelation stories of good fortune, while alluding to her looks — well, yeah, it was best to keep that short. Also, it is flattering peculiar that while Vergara did discuss "Modern Family," she also stars in a new film subsequent weekend, "The Three Stooges," and didn't discuss it once.

Score: 4.5

"Just Friends" (Jason Sudeikis, Andy Samberg, Nasim Pedrad, Taran Killam, Vanessa Bayer) Sudeikis and Samberg do a good pursuit of offered the rashness of only a integrate of pals out on the town, dancing in brief shorts. But, yikes, aren't we past the whole, "People consider we're gay, ew," form premise?

Score: 3.5

"The Manuel Ortiz Show" (Fred Armisen, Taran Killam, Sofia Vergara, Kristen Wiig, Kenan Thompson, Bill Hader, One Direction) This unequivocally is the accurate same blueprint each singular time. we mean, even "Gilly" does change the account ever so slightly. Part of me wants to residence the competition emanate and how it relates to this blueprint — generally with Vergara as partial of the sketch. But, honestly, we only don't have it in me. This blueprint is so stale, we can't even find the appetite to find it descent or not. Also: I'll be honest, we don't know most about One Direction, yet we will acknowledge that they are dreamy. (And, from the catcalls, we assume that they substantially all did unequivocally good for themselves during the after party.)

Score: 3.0

The Ugly

"Gilly" (Kristen Wiig, Sofia Vergara, Bobby Moynihan, Abby Elliott, Kenan Thompson, Andy Samberg) we have a feeling that during the subsequent few weeks we'll be saying the Greatest Hits, of sorts, for the vacating Kristen Wiig. And even yet Wiig settled that her Gilly and Penelope were retired, well, we now know that's not true. And, yes, we get it. And in a way, we admire Wiig for holding a "Screw you: If we wish to play Gilly one final time, I'm going to play Gilly" attitude. But that doesn't meant that we have to like Gilly. we mean, even Kristen Wiig's mom doesn't like Gilly. (And we never satisfied until now how most we favourite Will Forte in the "Gilly" sketches.) So, yes, ready yourself for one some-more Penelope and, with Sudeikis leaving, too, we wouldn't be astounded to see the "Two A-Holes" come behind after a prolonged hiatus.

Score: 2.0

(Note: "Lil' Poundcake" creatively aired on a before episode and is not a partial of this Scorecard.)
