MONDAY FAVOURITES – FASHION ROUND-UP with COURTNEY ...
Apr 29th 2012, 23:03

Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week 2012 starts today (Romance was Born is on RIGHT NOW actually) and I was going to dedicate my entire Monday Favourites to it. But, then I saw celebrities at the White House Press Correspondent's dinner, and then I saw a bunch of celebrities at the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival dinner and then I thought: "this is just more interesting". So today it's 'Monday Favourites: The Celebrity Edition (again)'.

Firstly, what on earth is Rachel Zoe doing at the White House Press Correspondent's dinner? Charlize Theron has an African Outreach Project, Elle McPherson is the perfect supermodel in a black dress for photo opportunities and well, at least Zooey Deschanel has her own television program (although don't get me started on it). But Rachel Zoe? The only thing she's an ambassador for is under eating, and she can't even bring herself to crack a smile! Obama's president for goodness sake! You're in America, 'Land of the Free'! Come on.

All this Zoe-bashing is actually in aid of a video completely unrelated to fashion but far more important: Stephen Colbert's slating of President Bush at the 2006 White House Press Correspondent's Dinner. I only just saw this! You must watch it now! It is one of the bravest, most hilarious slap-in-the-faces to ever be given to a politician. Watch it! Watch it! Watch it!

Secondly, isn't it interesting that the celebrities in attendance have assimilated a White House dinner with monochromatic flounce:

Soooo interesting. Does anyone else hate knee boots? Especially when they're worn without black opaques? Especially when they're floral brocade? Giovanna Battaglia has demonstrated how to turn a perfectly good pair of pins into a frumpy, fake-tan fest with this Dolce and Gabbana get-up at the Chanel Tribeca Film Festival dinner. Also, did anyone else know that Julia Reston-Roitfeld was pregnant? She looks super cute in this Prada flame dress:

At the same event, Alexa Chung got upstaged in the bookworm department by someone who I don't know, showing her exactly how you can dress like a nerd without being a frump:

Liv Tyler and Leelee Sobieski returned from the nineties (hopefully with new films, love you Leelee!) with austere, classic looks:

The Aussies – Camille Belle and Naomi Watts – upstaged everyone in the dress department with their simple shtick:

Speaking of Australians, remember when Cate Blanchett wore this to the Academy Awards and it got slated as a fashion faux pas when it was actually the Coolest Thing Anyone Has Ever Worn to an Awards Ceremony?

The Cannes Film Festival is in May (which starts tomorrow!) so stay tuned for red carpet dress sense and pro-Nazi directors delivered to your door here at Monday Favourites.

Let's see this week's round-up out with the potential for some closer-to-home fashion-celebrity sightings. Mercedes Benz Australian Fashion Week have managed to court an impressive set of key industry folk, including Pamela Anderson.

The Queen of the Blogosphere, Susie Lau of Style Bubble will be attending, along with Leandra Medine of The Man Repeller; look how much fun they're having:

Grammatically challenged 'style icon' Rumi Neely of Fashiontoast will also be attending, taking photos all of Sydney like this:

See what she's doing here? She's like, expressing her ecological orientation while also appearing wistful, deep in thought and intelligent. She's also wearing an incredibly fashion-forward cardigan: you heard it here first people, hoodies are back!

Extremely recognisable faces Yvan Rodic of Face Hunter, Whitney Port and Taylor Tomasi Hill now of Moda Operandi (ex Elle) will also attend.

That's it from me. It's beautiful in Wellington and I'm now heading out onto Oriental Parade to enjoy the day. Where should I go Wellingtonians? I've already been to Japan City and The Bead Shop, and now I need something more.Email me!
