There are two types of people in this world. Those who like Zooey Deschanel and those who don't. Not to say either group is better, but I am in the camp of "pro-Deschanel." My infatuation with the wide-eyed, 50's throwback styled starlet started with the fantastic film (500) Days of Summer. After being caught in the quirky tractor beam I went back and watched other great films she was in like All the Real Girls. Interested in what her next big role would be I found out she was doing a TV show. For FOX of all places, playing a girl who was recently cheated on and seemed to be crying the entire season. I was not looking forward to this.
I checked the show out anyway and to my surprise I really enjoyed the first few episodes. The show is almost finished with its first season now. Although there were some sharp curves in the road, New Girl has really grown to be what is is today: A very witty and ofttimes heartfelt ensemble comedy.
I won't deny, the characters in New Girl were inconsistent between different episodes. For example, in one episode Jess (Deschanel) is so uncomfortable talking about sex that she can't even say the word "penis" and then a few episodes later she is rambling about the sexually deviant things she planning to do to the guy she is dating. This doesn't make the individual episode bad, but the growing pains were apparent.
With two episodes to go all the characters seem very comfortable now. We are still learning things about Jess, her best friend Cece (Hannah Simone), and her roommates Nick (Jake Johnson), Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Winston (Lamorne Morris) but they all are predictable to a certain degree now.
New Girl has had some really memorable moments like the circa 1920's gangster voice foreplay, the most awkward sexual invitation: "V-bomb on the p-bomb", Schmidt's many douchebag moments such as "Can someone please get my towel? It's in my room next to my Irish walking cape!" One of my most favorite moments of the season involved Phil Collins and a chicken dance.
My girlfriend was firmly in the anti-Deschanel camp and even she was won over by this show. I can't overstate how big of a win that is. So if you thought you'd hate this show or if you were immediately put off by Zooey Deschanel I strongly urge you to give this show a shot, I highly recommend it.
