The adorkable star of FOX's hit show "New Girl" reveals she was bullied as a child. Her crime: she was chubby.
Although smokin' hot now, 32-year-old Zooey Deschanel opens up about her awkward years in the May issue of Marie Claire — years when kids can be oh-so-cruel. So cruel, in fact, one girl even spat in Deschanel's face.
Deschanel says after she dropped 30 pounds, her classmates began treating her differently. These day Deschanel experiences a different kind of criticism. According to Marie Claire, some ridicule her for playing into the "stereotypes of female meekness, for being too girly, too dorky, too Zooey."
"People do think I'm weird," she says. "I don't know why."
While some call her weird. Others call her a breath of fresh air. Regardless if people like her, she doesn't have time to obsess over it. She's too busy working.
"I like working," she said. "That's what I like doing. I like to work."
Besides producing and playing the lead character, Jess, in "New Girl", Deschanel also fronts her own band "She & Him" and helps run the female-friendly blog, HelloGiggles.com. And her schedule doesn't seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Deschanel recently tweeted that "New Girl" has been picked up for a second season.
You can watch "New Girl" on Tuesdays at 8 on FOX 4.
