TV series from Xena: Warrior Princess and Scrubs to Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Community have staged musical episodes. And, since New Girl's leading lady, Zooey Deschanel, is a bona fide pop star, it would make sense for her show to do one, too, right?
Not so fast! "I'm not sure," the actress — half of the indie duo She & Him — tells TVLine. "You always have to consider how things fit into the world of the show. The comedy is totally different on [for instance] Community. They can get away with making things a bit more surreal."
More surreal than the broken penis that New Girl gave Schmidt (Max Greenfield)? Yes, actually. "The writers spent a lot of time on Wikipedia making sure that that was at least somewhat possible!" Deschanel says. "It's definitely silly, and I'm not saying we don't go with the silliness, but we don't go with the surreal."
Nonetheless, the actress is more than open to the idea. "I think it would be really fun, and I'd love to do something like that," she insists. "They'd just have to find a way to put it into the reality of [our] world."
