May 19th, 2012 by Christian, who is worth No Comments » You've probably seen the Zooey Deschanel iPhone commercial by now. The one where she wants tomato soup delivered and asks if its raining within clear view of a window. Yeah, it's indefensibly irksome even if you like Zooey Deschanel. (Personally, I like Zooey Deschanel; I like her in New Girl and she's a looker.) And wouldn't you know it, more and more people are starting to get fed up by the cloying "I'm so whimsical" schtick.
In response to the iPhone ad, someone made a parody Twitter account, Zooey Asks Siri, that ponders questions like, "Siri, do trees get to pick what color their leaves turn in autumn?" Prior to the Zooey Deschanel iPhone 4s ad, SNL was already lampooning her for being so quirky (video after the jump). And even before the sketch, there was an audible groan on blogs about the then upcoming New Girl. The preview for the show raised the ire of some because it highlighted all the facets of Deschanel that make her the face of "magical pixie girls." You know, Charlize Theron's character in Sweet November or Natalie Portman in Garden State or Zooey Deschanel in every movie she's been in. My favorite essay on the matter is by EJ Dickson on NERVE, "How Zooey Deschanel (Almost) Ruined My Sex Life".
The whole backlash is just really funny and kind of interesting if you consider how she's become the female Michael Cera. She could actually be very similar to her onscreen persona and that's fine but, I think a lot of people find her behavior a calculated affectation. Again, I find her likeable but seriously, who orders tomato soup? The question still stands even if you have an answer.
Video evidence after the jump.
