New Girl - Courtesy of FOX

The New Girl in the title is the charming Zooey Deschanel, who moves in with three dudes needing a fourth room-mate in this quirky freshman comedy on Fox. Zooey Deschanel's Jess has just ended a bad breakup, sings her stress away, and looks on with doe-eyed innocence at the antics of Nick, Schmidt, and Winston (played by Jake M. Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Lamorne Morris respectively).
The chemistry between the characters feels a little weak and forced in the beginning. By the second half of its first season, the foursome, with the added spice of Jess' best friend Cece (Hannah Simone) definitely improves and are cooking up some amazing comedy together. It helps that each person brings something a bit different to the mix. Nick is the perpetual downtrodden underachiever it feels good to root for, even if you doubt they're going anywhere. Schmidt is the annoying and embarrassing over-achiever you still remain friends with because the fun stuff always seem to happen around them. Winston is the straight man you count on to bail you out of the crazy, only to surprise you and hop on the crazy train at the last minute. Together, they've created a hit that comes back next season for another chance at making you laugh.
Some things on the horizon: is the romance between Cece and Schmidt really over? Will Nick and Jess ever be at the right state to recognize and pursue that spark of connection we keep seeing? Will Winston ever become more than the Damon Wayans Jr. replacement? Watch season 2 to find out!
Note: For the record, Damon Wayans Jr. who played the third roommate in the series pilot, left the show to pursue ABC's Happy Endings. They brought in Lamorne Morris' Winston by second episode.
New Girl will return Tuesday, September 25th.
