App Review: Battleheart

Battleheart is kind of like an RPG, but compressed. You control four characters at a time with twelve to chose from for your party. Every level—and there is actually a substantial amount of them for an app (over 30 in total)—consists of the four characters you picked standing in an arena. Then the enemies start flowing in and you drag your finger across the screen towards the enemies and your characters go and start battling them.

Simple, right? Well, for the most part, yes, but it does get a little bit more complex. For instance, there are certain types of characters, such as healers, or fighters. The characters that heal must be kept away from the enemies as they can’t fight and only a few hits deal the final blow to them. Fighters, of course, go right into the battle. Every time you win a battle you collect some loot to equip your characters, and XP, to level up your characters.

So for an app there is actually quite a lot of content. Beating the game easily takes 15 hours, so really, there’s a lot more length than they let on.The graphics are good. They’ve got the done-in-a-flash look which appear amazing on Apple’s retina display. Everything flows nicely and the game is frequently updated, so there constantly are new things to do. Which, topped with the already long campaign, gives the game lasting value.

With the game being very simple, it appeals mainly to casual gamers. However, with the use of all the equipable items (over one hundred) and the fact the levels do get increasingly difficult and require some strategy, the game also appeals to the more hard-core gamers. Here’s some quick stats on the game. The price is currently $2.99, which for the content, is appropriately priced. The rating is 9+ for infrequent/mild cartoon or fantasy violence. Battleheart was developed by Kelli Bordner and published by Mika Mobile. As of yet there’s is no achievement system or online leader boards such as Game Center or Open Feint.

The game is very addictive, with the levels being just the right length. You can pick it up and play for a few minutes or for a few hours, and never get bored. The graphics are great, the flow of the game is appealing, and the lasting value of the game is fantastic. All in all the game is just plain great. Definitely worth purchasing.
