A couple of weeks ago I randomly stumbled on the following video on youtube and I am so glad I did.
For years in the modeling industry I was a novelty for being both a model and educated. Sometimes I was hired for work simply because I was in college and the client thought that was cool. Sometimes I don’t get work because I have class or because the clients think if I am in college I’m not serious about modeling.
In all fairness I’m not that serious about modeling. No one should be.
When I was accepted to medical school a female friend of mine asked who interviewed me. After responding “three male physicians” she said “Oh. no wonder you got in. How are your knees feeling?”. I was shocked. This is a comment from a friend. A woman insinuating that it was not my personal accomplishments that led to my success, but my looks and accused oral sex acts. How is this an acceptable “joke”? I wasn’t laughing. I was deeply hurt and offended.
Women are taught that beauty and intelligence are mutually exclusive. The “dumb model” is the poster child for this myth that is propagated by men everywhere threatened by beautiful, talented women. If you’ve seen “New Girl” you know what I’m talking about. Zooey Deschanel plays the modern dumb blonde, a stunningly beautiful ditz. The successful intelligent women are portrayed in the media
as nerds, overweight, and unattractive. Think “Ugly Betty”. Although personally, I think “ugly” betty is gorgeous.
The fact that physical appearance is even discussed in the same sentence as a woman’s success is a problem. That is why I love this new campaign so much. Thank you, Norma Kamali for starting this movement!
Stop Objectification & Enjoy:
P.S.
I just got an email from one of my modeling friends, she’s applying to medical school.
Doctor Model power!
Models in college are no longer a novelty, they are the norm. Thank you ladies for stepping up, breaking the mold, and following all of your dreams.
