Top 10: Romances with Heart Breaking Endings. « MoviePass

November, it comes around every year and every year it is just as depressing as the previous one. Nights get darker, air gets colder, relationships end and everyone just wants this month to be over so the holidays can begin. Yet, even though we feel rubbish this time of the month, we still torture ourselves by watching romances that make us cry literal rivers. Well we have compiled a list of the most tear jerking romances ever to grace the film industry. This is nowhere near a finite list! Without further ado… contains spoilers.

10) (500) Days Of Summer (2009)

(500) Days of Summer masks itself as a quirky romantic comedy starring Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt but just as the narrator tells us “This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, that is it not a love story”. Straight away our dreams of a cheery romantic comedy are dashed and Tom end’s up alone while Summer marries another dude. Sad Face.

9) Forrest Gump (1994)

“I’m not a smart man but I know what love is!” Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has been chasing the love of his life Jenny (Robin Wright) for years and just when he finds her, her life gets taken from her! But it’s not all sad because Jenny leaves Forrest a little piece of her to get him by… a son.

8) Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind (2004)

This film is one of those arty ones that don’t hit you where it hurts until the credits have rolled and you are left numb sitting in the dark. Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) have a pretty bizarre and messed up relationship. So when a new technology arrives allowing the subject to delete sections of their own memory; Joel goes on a race against time to save what little memories of Clem he has left. But you can’t stop science

Blue Valentine follows the love of Dean Pereira (Ryan Gosling) and Cindy Heller (Michelle Williams). But this isn’t just your average love story as this film follows the breaking down of love and marriage and the desperate attempts to go back to the beginning. We’ll love you Gosling!

After falling in love with a French prostitute who has been promised to the Duke of Monroth (Richard Roxburgh); bohemian writer Christian (Ewan McGregor) really understands what it feels to be broken hearted when Satine (Nicole Kidman) dies of tuberculosis. 5) A Walk To Remember (2002)

The classic teen story with a Sparksian twist! Popular kid Landon Carter (Shane West) is forced to join the school’s drama club where he meets loner Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore). With her kindness and selflessness; Jamie manages to mould Landon into the perfect romantic hero but drops a massive medical bombshell on his shoulders! Be warned for the “Our love is like the wind… I can’t see it, but I sure can feel it” quote… major tear jerker!

4) Steel Magnolias (1989)

Another one of those perfect love stories with the ridiculously heartbreaking endings. Steel Magnolias sees Shelby (Julia Roberts) and Jackson (Dylan McDermott) fall in love and get ready to start their happily ever after. That is until Shelby finds out her has diabetes, which disenables her to have children without dying. But sometimes a motherly instinct is just too strong to resist.

3) Atonement (2007)

Cecilia (Keira Knightley) and Robbie Turner (James McAvoy) are desperately in love despite the fact she is from an upper class family and Robbie… well isn’t. However, instead of their class differences preventing them from being together, it is Cecilia’s jealous younger sister Briony (Saoirse Ronan) who accuses Robbie of raping her cousin. After that the pair searches for each other but to no avail.

2) The Notebook (2004)

Yes, another one of Nicolas Sparks’s novel makes the list of the Top 10:Romances with Heartbreaking Endings. This time it is the unconditional love between Noah Calhoun (Ryan Gosling) and Allie Hamiilton (Rachel McAdams). The kissing-in-the-rain scene is probably the most romantic scene ever and every girl wishes to be kissed the way Noah kisses Allie. But don’t be fooled… the sadness of this film starts at the very beginning when the audience realise that their love is doomed.

AND THE WINNER IS……….

1) Titanic (1997)

The winner is the classic true story of the Titanic, which follows the doomed love between Jack Dawson (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) as their time comes to an end with the sinking of the ship. This is particularly sad because the tragedy of the Titanic still haunts to this day! But we are pretty sure there was enough room for two on that door Rose! -_-
