“You’re so indecisive!”
I can’t tell you how many times people have accused me of such character flaw, such “crime.” And while my indecision has decreased over the years (I think…not sure, really), I’ve begun to notice desirable traits perhaps attached to it.
Here are three reasons why being indecisive is awesome.
1.) Indecisive people are spontaneous
Because planning requires a decision ahead of time, we indecisive folk tend to live in the moment. Perhaps this is why I hate being scheduled for work. Freelance writing lets me choose when I want to work. Sure, I have a deadline, but I can knock something out at any time of the day, any day I choose.
When I lived in New York City, my non-planning brought conflict. I had friends who needed two to three weeks’ notice to hang out. We almost never hung out. Of course, I’ll hopefully plan my wedding one day. But since we indecisive folk flip-flop sometimes, you can probably talk us out of something (which prevents us from being stagnant in life).
Yes, by mentioning ‘wedding’ and ‘being talked out of something,’ I just suggested Zooey Deschanel can probably talk me out of marrying so-and-so. Not ashamed, there.
2.) Indecisive people are open minded
This is one of my favorite traits I have. Flip-flopping or being unsure about an issue allows us indecisive people to remain open minded. I actually feel bad for people who are so decisive about something, no amount of reason or experience can change their minds.
Of course, I have some long-held convictions. But if you present a case to me stricken with passion, sincerity and logic, you’ll probably sway me. And I think that’s perfect. If I ever become so committed to an idea that even passion, sincerity and logic can’t sway me, please slap me.
3.) Indecisive people lead more interesting lives
Yup. I said it. We have more fun. We go where the wind blows, live in the moment and often research both sides of an argument. We don’t get stagnant or stuck. We change jobs and settings. We take risks. We decide on the spot. We write the best memoirs.
Indecision, if done right, is a life of fun, thoughtfulness and occasional mental tranquility (when we finally make a decision). But when we do make a decision, you better believe it is awesome or at least interesting. Because we are the most evolved species on the planet and you’re lucky to know us.
