“Elf,” starring Will Ferrell as Buddy, , is a total Christmastime classic. Buddy the Elf ended up stowed away in Santa’s sack one fateful Christmas Eve and was subsequently raised in the North Pole as an elf until he finds out the truth about his identity. From there on, Buddy is on a tumultuous and hilarious journey to get to know his birth father who lives in New York. Buddy experiences the city and all its wonders for the first time, and inadvertently wreaks havoc wherever he goes. Along the way, he manages to find a girl, Jovie, with whom he becomes smitten, played by an almost unrecognizable Zooey Deschanel. Ferrell is positively charming and endearing in his role as Buddy. This movie is the perfect combination of sentimental and hilarious; so you better watch it for goodness sake!
“The Holiday”, written and directed by the queen of feel good rom-coms, Nancy Meyers, centers on two women with dating troubles who want to escape from home for the holidays. Iris, played by the gorgeous Kate Winslet, lives in London and writes as a wedding columnist while nursing the unrequited love she has for her colleague. Amanda Woods, played by Cameron Diaz, lives in L.A., is a workaholic, and finds out that her boyfriend has been unfaithful. The women meet through a home exchange website and decide to swap homes for the holidays. Amanda, staying in Iris’s cozy cottage, meets Iris’s brother, the ever-sexy Graham played by Jude Law, who helps her loosen up. Meanwhile, the endearingly pathetic Iris meets a 90-year-old neighbor and former screenwriter, who helps her get her self-esteem back. She finds love in film composer Miles, played by Jack Black, along the way. Factoring in the music and the scenery, Diaz’s shiny hair, Winslet’s enchanting voice, Law’s grin, and Black’s laugh, “The Holiday” is destined to leave you feeling warm and fuzzy. This movie is best watched with some hot cocoa, a big blanket, and your best girlfriends.
The story of a precocious eight-year-old boy left behind during the holidays, is another classic. “Home Alone” is a movie that you want to watch with the whole family. Macaulay Culkin stars as Kevin McCallister, the runt of a huge family, Owho is accidentally left “home alone” while his family flies to France for Christmas. Kevin, who wishes to be alone because he hates the chaos of his large family where everyone picks on him. During his break from his family, Kevin has a dandy time jumping on his parents bed, eating all the junk food he wants, and applying aftershave with comedic results until he’s forced to do everything he can to defend his home from a couple of idiotic burglars on Christmas Eve. This movie never fails to make you shed a sentimental tear, all the while giving you a good laugh.
