zooey deschanel from “new girl” was getting lots of press over the weekend for her character jess’ monologue:
“I brake for birds. I rock a lot of polka dots. I have touched glitter in the last 24 hours. I spend my entire day talking to children. And I find it fundamentally strange that you’re not a dessert person. It freaks me out. I’m sorry that I don’t talk like Murphy Brown. And I hate your pants suit. I wish it had ribbons on it or something just to make it slightly cuter but that doesn’t mean I’m not smart and tough and strong.”
i’m with her on the brake for birds, although i rock a lot more feathers than polka dots as of late. i stay FAR away from glitter (housecleaning nightmare), but i do spend upwards of 75% of my day talking to my children (or talking AT my children). dessert does not impress me, then again, neither does murphy brown. i’m ambivalent about pant suits. given the right occupation, i’m sure i could find a cool one to rock (cool, for me, would mean, minus the ribbons, maybe plus a few extra zippers or buttons on it to make it slightly cuter). i think that still leaves me smart and tough and strong.
but, back to braking for birds. after dropping the kids off at school i heard a red-tailed hawk squawking so loud it cut through my radio. (lately, i can’t get enough of the dandy warhols’ station on pandora). i pulled over, put the hazard lights on and watched a female land in the tree above her nest and then proceed to drop off some food for the babies.
there was so much activity, i hung around for a while and watched her soaring in the winter sky. soon, another red-tailed hawk joined her and they flew around for a few minutes. i looked down to check my phone for a second, when i noticed that one of the hawks had landed in the front yard of a house halfway down the street. i pulled up in front of the house and the hawk flew up into a tree, carrying the severed front half of a bunny.
AWESOME!
then i notice the snow in the yard is bloody and full of little tufts of grey bunny fur. so, i pull out my handy dandy iphone and grab some footage. what i find is the back end of the bunny (think of the plane in LOST, only picture it with two little bunny feet), then, pretty much every internal organ on display as well as a couple bowel movements (this was not that bunny’s finest moment).
as i walked around i was struck by the POWER of this amazing bird. at times, i even got fearful that the bird would come back for more and dive bomb me. (ridiculous, i know, but the situation was intense).
in any case, here’s the video of what i saw:
apologies to those of you who prefer polka dots to nature’s carnage!
and for those of you who dig on power animals, here’s a link to the red-tailed hawk’s symbolism and meaning:
