Mindy Kaling's Elle Cover Has Everyone Talking | Girls Can't Resist

Actress, comedian and all-around awesome woman Mindy Kaling got her first cover on Elle and everyone is freaking out about it, both good and bad.

Good: Kaling even said herself that the cover photo made her feel glamorous and cool, and that she loves it. Many sources also loved the cover and were super excited to see it finally arrive.

Bad: Kaling’s cover looks different from the other three women shot for the Women In TV issue. The three other women – Amy Poehler, Zooey Deschanel and Allison Williams – all had color, 3/4 body shot photos while Kaling’s was a closeup of her face and was also in black and white.

Many other sources have called out Elle for hiding not only Kaling’s “curves” (she’s a size 8 which is pretty average for an American woman) but also for changing the colors to black and white on the cover of a mag that has been called out in the past for lightening the skin of some of their cover subjects.

Personal opinion? If you’re going to do four different covers for the same issue either have them all different or all the same. Such a vast ratio between types of photos that also coincides with the racial disparity of those on the covers makes it look as if it was done on purpose. In a world where women of color are vastly underrepresented in the media, a source as large as Elle should be working to solve the problem, not make it worse.
