What I Really Like About Music - COBBlog

Music is a big deal at Concordia. One third of the students are involved in music ensembles around campus and for fun on the weekend, people have jam sessions. I play the flute and have impromptu sing-alongs with my roommates to get my music fix.

Though I don’t blog about it much, music also manifests itself in a different way in my life. Though I play music, I enjoy music being performed and listening to various albums more than I enjoy performing music myself. Obviously, there are a lot of musicians around campus who enjoy making their own music, but I get uncomfortable playing in front of people and would rather put my headphones in to rock out to a good album. So here are a few of my recommendations:

My iPod gets me through the cold walks to and from school.

1) I gotta throw a plug in for Slug. Atmosphere is one of my favorite rap groups (I even have a favorite track list on Spotify! Check it out). I have seen him perform live two times now, once at Cornstock (Concordia’s spring event) and at the Hub, a local Fargo venue. I’ll be seeing him again in February and am looking forward to it.The main reason I like Slug is because his raps are more of a story in each song, which is entertaining. And in many of his songs (Hair, the Waitress, Yesterday…), he incorporates a surprise ending which holds the listeners interest.

2) If you haven’t seen the new Disney hit Frozen, it is a must see. As someone who is not usually a fan of musicals, I was surprised by how much emotion this movie evoked in me. Not only is the movie wonderful, but the soundtrack is great to sing along to. All of my roommates agree with me on this one.

3) M. Ward – specifically his album A Wasteland Companion. This album features Zooey Deschanel, so if you like the band She & Him, you will like this album. This album is inticing because M. Ward sounds like he is on a stage right in front of you due to the echo in his voice. I first heard M. Ward on the Current (a cities radio station) and Primitive Girl immediately caught my attention.

A few artists/bands I am also listening to currently include: Neutral Milk Hotel, Young the Giant, and Dessa. If you have any music recommendations for me, comment below!
