When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Scientists told Sacha Baron Cohen, "Don't show up in character or we'll ban you," they were obviously serious about it. However, I'm pretty sure that when you tell Sacha Baron Cohen not to do something, he's going to do it anyway, and be more insistent that he do it. Sacha Baron Cohen showed up to the Academy Awards last night in character as Admiral General Aladeen, and the Dictator of Wadiya spilled the ashes of his friend Kim Jong-Il all over Ryan Seacrest.
Apparently, Cohen and the Oscars people came to some kind of agreement and he was allowed to walk the red carpet. That said, I'm sure he didn't get approval to do this bit and spill ashes all over Ryan Seacrest's red carpet tuxedo. Judging from the reaction Seacrest gives Cohen/Aladeen, he's not pleased and this was not really planned or coordinated with the E! Entertainment Television megastar. The fact that security is there to immediately push Cohen on down the line in spite of the bit (or as part of it) makes it even more funny/even more off-the-cuff.
