Air Date: Tuesday, March 27, 2012, 9/8c on Fox

RATING:

"I'm gonna die alone, and I'm so, so sad right now." – Jess

Russell better watch out because Jess is easy to fall in love with...

Now this is comedy. "Fancyman Pt. 2" makes me giggle, snort, and laugh out loud because the writing is witty, the acting is on point, and the guest stars totally rock! Yes, I think the saving grace of New Girl is its guest stars because this episode would have been boring without them. Okay, not completely boring since there is a huge reveal in the back of the "manbulance" which I'm still snickering over. Don't you just love it when people are caught in predicaments they can't easily explain away? I'm still looking forward to what will happen with each new episode now that the cat is out of the bag.

Observations and thoughts:

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) should not date anyone, ever. I don't know how she gets these handsome guys to ask her out (repeatedly) even after she shows her quirky side. "I don't go on dates very often. Guys my age always want to skip the date and go right for the gold. Which I don't give them because I'm stingy with my gold; unless they dig for it." It's astounding Russell (Dermot Mulroney) doesn't run away. Jess is beyond quirky now and onto just plain ridiculous. I have to say Deschanel is getting into the role of Jess probably more than I expected. I believe she's Jess—from the way she talks to her goofy exclamations which make no sense. Deschanel has found her calling.

Dirk (Martin Starr) is the best part of "Fancyman Pt. 2" as he's pure comic relief. He's a friend of Nick's (Jake Johnson) we've never met before and I have to ask why he's been hidden away until now. The guy is a riot. "Sometimes when I get a really long email… (long pause) I don't read it." Not only does he look funny, his poetry makes no sense and makes you laugh because there's no other choice. Starr's nonchalant delivery fuels the hilarity as he perfects the persona of a sleepy, hippie, beatnik with a collection of PhD's. Nick keeps saying how Dirk is "the smartest guy I know," and I think he might be right. At least he drops some knowledge which can't be disputed. His wisdom sends Winston (Lamorne Morris) running off to Mexico after his girlfriend Shelby (Kali Hawk). Singing along to the Wicked soundtrack. I could not stop laughing. Sheer, genius.

Dirk and Nick steal the show with their drunken stupidity.

And speaking of Winston running to Mexico, guess who's in the back of Schmidt's (Max Greenfield) car? I'm not surprised to find Schmidt and Cece (Hannah Simone) in the middle of bringing Schmidt's fantasy location number three sexfest to fruition. I never laughed so hard in my life. While I knew what was coming, I held my breath hoping Winston wouldn't notice the two of them in the car. Talk about an epic road trip!

Funny lines:

Jess to Dirk: "Are you wearing a lady scarf?"

**

Schmidt to Winston about the proper name for his vehicle: "Oh, I don't have a car, Winston."

Winston: "Hey, Schmidt, uh do you mind if I use the manbulance?"

**

Dirk to Nick about his recent breakup: "I guess it was too hard to support me. Financially."

**

Dirk to Nick on his recent discovery: "See girls our age, what do they want? They want us to wed them; sire their children, they want you to have a, uh bed frame; they want you to eat off plates."

**

Dirk giving Winston relationship advice: "You know what space means, right? That's space to have sex with other people."

Winston: "No. Space means you go to Mexico and you don't have sex with other people."

**

Winston leaving Shelby a detailed voicemail: "Baby, look I don't want space, ok. I don't want anyone to have space. I want to be standing right in front of you. I want the air that you breathe to be the air coming directly from out of my mouth. I want to just be passing air back and forth between each other until it's mostly carbon dioxide and then we both pass out and die."

**

Jess is quite the party girl this week. Even though she's so sad.

Jess and Russell's dating dilemma turns out to be a case of nerves over not having dated much, which puts their story in the back seat for me. I enjoyed seeing a centralized story connecting each of the supporting characters. Not only does Dirk make me laugh, but Winston catching Cece and Schmidt together, and Nick in his drunken state, slays me. I mean, seriously, how could he think he was lost? Maybe he shouldn't stop off in random parks to vomit (which he never does by the way) while three sheets to the wind. Just a thought. But I don't mind it so much since he makes me laugh like a loon. If we can continue on this route, New Girl will win back my title of favorite comedy show.

Nick might turn his life around now. Let's hope so.

Focusing on one person, one plot per episode, works. Having all the characters doing their own thing is disjointed and isn't entertaining.
