* * * * * Peter Broderick * * * * *

Peter Broderick… Born January 20, 1987, Peter Broderick is a musician/composer from Portland, Oregon. There he as played and toured with numerous groups (Horse Feathers, Norfolk & Western, Loch Lomond, Laura Gibson, etc.), and has established himself as a regular session musician for numerous recording studios, adding violin, banjo, musical saw, mandolin, etc. to artists such as M. Ward, Zooey Deschanel, Dolorean, and many more. But aside from working with all of these other artists, Peter's main focus is his own music.
As a child he studied classical violin, but over time he has collected many different instruments, trying to learn to play them all one by one. In mid 2007, Peter was invited by some of his heroes, the Danish ensemble Efterklang, to move to Copenhagen and join their live band. And so he dropped his entire life in Portland and moved across the world. Since then, he has released a mini album of solo piano music (Docile) on the Swedish label Kning Disk, as well as a 7″ (Retreat/Release) and his first full-length album of piano and string based compositions (Float).
His releases thus far have been primarily instrumental, but late 2008 will see the release of a completely different side of Peter's music. Home is a collection of folk songs, based around voice and guitar, recorded between tours at the end of 2007/beginning of 2008. Peter's live shows have been a mix of instrumental and vocal numbers, and so with the release of Home, both sides of his work will be available on recording.
CRAWL INTO MY BED: On December 10 & 11, 09, I played 2 very special concerts in Leuven, Belgium, @ the amazing STUK venue. They were label nights for Slaapwel records, who only release music to sleep to, and recently released my Music for a Sleeping Sculpture. They installed 50 beds, & everyone in the audience slept over, while me & 2 other artists performed in the middle of the room.
I only have a recording of the 1st night. I went on around 1 am, and performed for two & a half hours or so, until my musical brain was tired, and then went to sleep among the audience. I started off performing quiet versions of a couple songs people had requested, and then improvised the rest around a couple loose themes.I wouldn't recommend listening intently all the way through, but instead maybe try putting it on quietly in the background while you go about your business, cleaning your room, working on your computer, cooking dinner, taking a walk, laying in bed, etc. – Peter

Supersonic Festival Birmingham UK: Tricky recording, the PA was not the best and did not hold up to louder parts and there is also the constant noise of beer pumps at the bar behind. Despite all this it has not come out too bad, oh and Peter was doing a lot of live sampling, including his own introductions – it's not a mix up on the recording!

Peter Broderick has taken the wraps off the website that is his sophomore vocal album's namesake. On the surface, it offers streaming of the entire album, lyrics, media-rich liner notes and an invitation to share. Spend some time with it and you'll discover a beautiful mind at work and a hidden treasure trove. [ http://www.itstartshear.com ].
The style of Peter Broderick's new album will be familiar to anyone who's heard Efterklang, yet he has developed a compelling style of his own, particularly in the piano playing and overlaid instrumentation. Ticking percussion and quiet keyboards emerge softly from underneath the guitars, giving a great swelling sound to many of the songs.
As well as Efterklang's influence, atmospheric tracks such as 'Everything I Know' recall Bon Iver, while the guitar and harmonies on 'Colin' and 'With the Notes on Fire' gesture towards Tunng's experimental folkiness. Despite its title and awkward half-spoken verse vocals, 'It Starts Hear' has a very memorable pop/indie chorus and violin outro.

'Blue' opens with a nice acoustic guitar line, then echoing production on the voice gives a slightly off-putting doubled sound. Broderick's experimentation works better elsewhere, for example on the 8 minute-long 'Asleep', where whispering and a minor key piano turn into an epic chorus-vocal repetition of the words "where is your body?"
In his notes, Broderick writes that for this track he "enlisted anyone and everyone to submit recordings by sharing a commemorative text over the internet," which adds an interesting interactive element to the album. 'With the Notes on Fire' begins brilliantly with a big instrumental surge and catchy vocal line, flowing into a fast spoken-word bridge. The following song, 'Trespassing' has a careful guitar line, understated backing and beautiful singing. 'Everything I Know' continues along the same lines and is the best on the album, with a more traditional singer-songwriter feel and shows his composition skills.
Broderick's strength definitely lies in long instrumental build-ups, as fans will know from his previous piano and string-based releases, and he expands upon these with the use of production techniques. He is most successful when finding a balance between minimal vocals, layers of guitar and piano, and small but distinctive aural flourishes.
