This week the ICC wants to highlight pet adoption—a wonderful way to help homeless animals and bring a new, beloved friend into your life. This story comes from Patricia, a Corona resident.
I found my rescue dog on Petfinder.org. My dog and his brother were identified as Labrador mix puppies at the Humane Society. I had heard that black-coated dogs are often the last adopted because many favor cream-coated dogs, but my soon-to-be family member stood out in a kennel filled with cream-colored Border collie pups as the only one not
constantly yelping. So I brought him home.
That first week we visited the veterinarian for a well-puppy check-up and learned his was not a Labrador but in fact a German shepherd mix! Each breed has different
characteristics and I would soon realize that German shepherds are very trainable, good with children, and love to be part of a family.
I named him Zooey after the title character from the J.D. Salinger novel, "Franny and Zooey", and not after singer-actress Zooey Deschanel, though I'm often asked if she inspired his name.
Zooey, in his three and a half years with my family, has become a loving, loyal member of my family. You'll often find him on his daily walk with my 21 year old son, Jacob, around the Chase Ranch neighborhood. He scares a lot of passersby with his nosiness but they instantly realize his tail is wagging and his bat-wing sized ears roll back as he says hi to
everyone. He socializes with other dogs at Camp Ilene and this summer we'll see how he enjoys swimming in their new swimming pool.
What I love best about Zooey is that he is 77 pounds of pure affection. He will hold hands with you, even if he's just met you. I call him my ultra-stress absorbent dog.
