My second 5k was a big success this Saturday – I shaved ten minutes off my time!
I really think I can attribute a lot of that to my sister. She joined me this time, and it turned out that we were very well matched. She’s able to run longer than I can, but I out-walk her easily. She was anxious to do her very best (“It’s each woman for herself… eat my dust!”), so she pulled ahead of me at the end, but I held my own by finishing about 30 seconds after her. So there. 
I also literally brought down the inflatable finish line (ok, it was probably an ill-timed gust of wind). I’m sure it would’ve been adorable if I were Zooey Deschanel and wearing a reindeer antler headband and some ridiculous tutu, but I’m me, so it was awkward. Oh well.
