For the Record, Mindy Kaling Loved Her Elle Cover | The Jane Dough

Ladies of The Late Night

Our feelings on Mindy Kaling’s recent Elle magazine cover were complex and multilayered — much like the fine woman herself, or a delicious goulash. On the one hand, we thought Kaling looked breathtaking in her black-and-white cover photo, yet on the other, we couldn’t help but notice that she was the only actress shot in a tight closeup. (To commemorate their Women in TV issue, Elle released four covers, each featuring either Kaling, Girls‘ Allison Williams, Zooey Deschanel, or Amy Poehler.) Since we couldn’t reach a final judgement on the cover (was it the best glamour shot that the Queens Center Mall’s portraiture studio never took or was it a subtle, sizeist slight?) we did what we do best: changed the subject and distracted everyone with silly GIFs.

Well, the Internet’s verdict is no longer needed since Kaling herself weighed in on the issue during her appearance on the Late Show. The Mindy Project showrunner was stunned by the controversy, telling Letterman that she thought the many womyn who ran to her aide were inadvertently insulting her. “The implication they were sort of saying was What, Elle? You can’t put her big fat body on the magazine‘” she joked. If you ask Kaling, the cover looks like she “died at [her] most beautiful.”
