Lately there’s been a lot of buzz surrounding (possible) continuances of big name films like Ghostbusters and Star Wars. Whether it’s a sequel, a trilogy or a series without an end in sight (the Saw films, anyone?) people usually have very strong opinions on whether or not a follow-up film was even warranted. Although the world will never agree on the importance of a strong sequel, here are some films that we think could benefit from one.
Something Borrowed
It’s been several years since 2011’s Something Borrowed was released in theatres and yet I’m still hoping for a sequel. Considering the fact that the film was based on a book that has its own sequel (aptly called Something Blue, following in the wedding tradition) it only makes sense for a sequel on-screen as well! It is possible I am just looking for excuse to put John Krasinski in another romantic comedy with Kate Hudson, but I maintain that it would be worth watching.
The Devil Wears Prada
Similar to Something Borrowed, The Devil Wears Prada is based on a book that has a sequel called Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns (which sounds like a cheesy D-list horror film, in all honesty). While the new book itself was kind of a train wreck, that doesn’t mean that the movie would also have to be. The first film was nominated for multiple films, including two Oscars (go figure, it’s Meryl Streep after all). If the sequel stayed in the same vein as the first one (and maybe gave a small overhaul of the book’s plot) I think it might just work.
28 Days Later
Zombie movies are like pizza: even when they’re bad, they’re still good. It’s sort of general knowledge that 2002’s 28 Days Later is one of the best zombie flicks around (that’s the general consensus, right?) and surprisingly enough, 28 Weeks Later was actually a decent follow-up film. If there were to be another film to make it a trilogy–perhaps 28 Months Later–I definitely wouldn’t be opposed.
(500) Days of Summer
There was something fresh, interesting and clearly quirky about watching the love affair between Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt play out in 500 Days of Summer. For some viewers, however, the ending gave little closure and even less satisfaction (were you not listening in the very beginning? The narrator warned you it wasn’t a love story!). It would definitely be interesting to see a sequel to the film, if only just to see another impromptu musical number featuring a Hall & Oats song. Or is 500 Days of Autumn too cheesy an idea?
Bridesmaids
For quite some time there was a rumour that a Bridesmaids sequel was in the works and people were really excited by it. This idea quickly fizzled out though when Kristen Wiig said she would have no part in it because it didn’t match her creative goals. She’s right, there’s no guarantee that a sequel wouldn’t succumb to the overdone, unfunny fate that The Hangover 2 (and The Hangover 3) did. But even with this thought in mind, who among us wouldn’t love to see Melissa McCarthy reprise her role as the slightly masculine, entirely hilarious Megan?
