One just has to love award season. The glitz and glamour of Hollywood dress up in the most extrensive jewellery and extravagant dresses, looking their most fabulous from head to toe. The red carpet is their runway catwalk, and the ladies fashionistas conquered the evening, with most of them taking their tastes to a whole new modest level. Admittedly, the classic Old Hollywood glamour was having a comeback, and may even be classified as a newly formed trend for this year's red carpet fashion.

The red carpet for the Golden Globe Awards 2012 was predominated by modest glamour with nude and blue palettes, mermaid tails and backless exposure.

Here are some of our favourite modest dresses from the red carpet:

Michelle Williams was criticised for her blue, patterned, velvet Jason Wu gown. It was a refreshing look for the red carpet, and Williams was one of the few fashionistas who could pull of the new red carpet trend of longer sleeves, matched with an admittedly cute sparkled headband. She looked more romantic, elegant and comfortable than ever. The Best Actress in a Movie Comedy or Musical, was a statuesque beauty that was shining from head to toe.

Zooey Deschanel glammed up the red carpet in a figure-flattering, custom Prada, a long-lined black gown, with an incredible high-neck green detail. Her 60s inspired Old Hollywood gown showed a different side to the normally adorkable and quirky young actress. Deschanel managed to maintain her inevitable adorability in this modest, but at the same time, fashion-forward dress, which matched perfectly with her refined shorter hair-do.

Michelle Williams in Jason Wu, Zooey Deschanel in custom Prada and Claire Danes in J.Mendel

Claire Dane looked sophisticated in a black and white J.Mendel. The clean-lined, backless dress, with embellished rhinestones turned heads. Literally. The nominated star for Best Actress in TV Drama, was a winner both in the award ceremony and on the red carpet. The classy and classic combination of black and white was reminiscent of Old Hollywood modest glamour, and the stunningly detailed back of the dresses added a sufficient touch of rock n roll.

Angelina Jolie in Atelier Versace and Emma Stone in Lanvin

Angelina Jolie shined in Atelier Versace, a clean-lined, ivory, satin dress with an asymmetrical neckline with a red fold at the shoulder. The royalty of Hollywood looked just as fabulous with her favourite accessories being by her side the whole time. Brad Pitt, of course. Not many people can pull off white satin bodice, but Jolie proved that nothing can go wrong with such a ferocious body.

Emma Stone was another surprisingly impressing favourite of the night. The young actress, has not only taken the movie screens by storm, but has now proved herself as a red carpet fashionista. Stone was a showstopper in a maroon chiffon dress by Lanvin, with embellished shoulder pads, which she matched with a bulky belt, giving it just the young edge it needed. The unique and cutting-edge colour palettes of maroon and fuchsia at the sides, matched perfectly with her crystal eyes and ginger hair colour, pulled back in an elegant way, which made her dress even more modestly flattering.

Kate Winslet in Jenny Packman and Jessica Alba in Lanvin

Kate Winslet was another sensation in a black and white dress by Jenny Packman. The curvaceous star look imposingly classy and feminine and her dress could not be more figure-flattering on her. It was yet another successfully modest choice for the British actress, yet with a touch of modernity with a district keyhole neckline, which she pulled off completely. Her monochromed dress added a touch of sophistication and classiness.

Jessica Alba was an undeniable sensation at this year's Golden Globes. The beautiful actress, who recently gave birth to her second child, looked flawless in a lavender purple Lanvin dress, which was detailed with the most stunningly done embellishments throughout her figure-hugging dress. Alba's underexposed choice of accessories gave more emphasis to her natural beauty and her eye-catching dress.
