Celebrities & Social Media Marketing

Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow & Zooey Deschanel Go Social
We all know that A-list celebrities have huge followings on major social media websites life Facebook and Twitter. Now celebrities are taking the next logical step and extending their followings across new social media sites that they own! Celebrities such as Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow and Zooey Deschanel are making their very own social media sites and apps specifically designed for their fans. Celebrities are looking to convert those followings into audiences for social media marketing purposes. Here is more information about Lady Gaga's, Gwyneth Paltrow's and Zooey Deschanel's social sites including my personal reviews of each.

Lady Gaga & LittleMonsters.com

Lady Gaga Little MonstersStefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, better know as Lady Gaga, is more than just a international chart-topping singer and songwriter. Lady gaga has been working with technology companies for quit some time. Last year she teamed up with Backplane to create her very social media networking site named Little Monsters, but there is more to this story than meets the eye. As one of their investors, Lady Gaga actually owns 20% of the California based startup. LittleMonsters.com is still an invitation only social media site and the layout might make you think of Pinterest, but the real question is, how big will LittleMonsters.com get? I think that Lady Gaga's LittleMonsters is a good concept and it will capture loyal followers within her fan base and niche demographic. I also believe that Lady Gaga made a very good move in becoming vested in Backplane and that she is a smart business women for doing so. However, I do not believe LittleMonsters will grow as much as our next social site, HelloGiggles. I will keep you updated on the growth of LittleMonsters and other social media sites like it so stay tuned. Until then, here is Lady Gaga's Google Chrome commercial.

Zooey Deschanel & HelloGiggles

Zooey-Deschanel-Hello-GigglesHelloGiggles embodies the cute-girl hipster lifestyle that Zooey Deschanel (star of the new Fox series "New Girl") is known for. Deschanel's HelloGiggles has become one of the latest examples of celebrity-led, socially driven media properties seeking the attention of marketers. When you visit HelloGiggles.com you will find cute pictures of animals, delicious treats, how to tips, and a few non-invasive advertisements. Most of HelloGiggles content is user-generated so you can always find different topics and articles that interest you. According to ComScore, HelloGiggles had nearly 400,000 U.S. unique visitors in January 2012, a niche group that's 75% female and 80% are between the ages of 18 and 34. This specific demographic layer makes it easy for online advertising agencies and brand managers to target users with their ads. HelloGiggles and social media sites like it are appearing everyday, the only question is, how big will HelloGiggles.com get? I like HelloGiggles and I think it is going to continue to grow and capture more of this market. I will keep you updated on the growth of HelloGiggles and other social media sites like it so stay tuned.

Gwyneth Paltrow & Goop City – Fail

Gwyneth Paltrow Goop CityIn December 2011, Gwyneth Paltrow became one of the latest celebrities to join the social media and mobile app market. Goop is a weekly newsletter delivered straight to your inbox that shares recipes, travel notes, shopping ideas, wellness tips, and so much more. When I went to goop for the first time I was surprised to find a very simple, crisp and clean websites which is very uncharacteristic for celebrity websites. From there things seemed to head down hill, at least for me.

When you visit goop.com you will see images, that on some pages are being used in correlation with extremely small text underneath and some without, as if I am supposed to know what the images stand for or be able to read that small text. I ended up in the "GET" section and I clicked on the first article titled "Ready for Spring" and I found an article by gp (assuming it's Gwyneth Paltrow) herself. In the post she talks about spring clothing and how she will provide "the best steals available for you to snap up" as if she is going to help me save money. On the lower half of the page you will see Gwyneth Paltrow wearing a mostly hideous collage of over priced clothing. Wake up gp, not very many people can spend $995 on a rope necklace in this economy. I can go to our local Saturday Market and buy one just as stylish for around $20 bucks! So I started to wonder why Gwyneth Paltrow would spend so much time and effort on this social site and then I fount this quote where Gwyneth Paltrow explained the inspiration behind the app in an email sent to GOOP subscribers:

I have always dreamed of finding a city guide that would be just right for me, like a trusted friend whose opinion you knew you could count on. After years of being steered in the wrong direction by bribed concierges, biased opinions and just plain bad suggestions, I decided to create what I had been missing: The goop City Guide! We begin with New York City and you can expect many more over the coming months. This app will be your resource for the tried and tested of the best and coolest of Manhattan (and Brooklyn, and a bit of Queens, the Bronx and New Jersey).

This really cleared up my confusion. Gwyneth Paltrow made a site that she would like. Unfortunately, there is only one of you Gwyneth, that is not a very big target audience. Does every single one of your advisers tell you that all of your ideas are great? I do not believe that goop will never reach the popularity that other celebrity social sites can achieve. Although I have loved Gwyneth Paltrow's movies for many years and I highly respect her natural talent and acting ability, I do not like goop at all.

Celebrity Social Conclusion

To wrap things up I will say that HelloGiggles is my personal favorite out of this group and LittleMonsters is a close second. However, I think that goop needs to go back to the drawing board. I look forward to seeing how big these newer sites will become and if my goop prediction is correct. I think my predictions are right, but if not, it would not be the first time I have been wrong, just ask my girl friend. In the end it is just my opinion and you are welcome to have you own. Please view all three of these sites and decide for yourself and make a comment on this page to let me know what you think.
