Tale as old as time, right? Lola Versus looks to be the personification of every girl who's ever been dumped, with no life direction and a moderate alcoholic addiction. The infusion of comedy and disaster seem to play quite nicely here, relying on the actors' quirky charms.
In terms of tone, I think disturbing yet light-hearted seems to be Fox Searchlight's new thing— I mean, this could be the heroine-driven version of their other indie-type film, 500 Days of Summer, which scored major points at the box office. But just one question pops to mind as I watched this trailer: Greta Gerwig who?
Well, she's the newest and freshest face in Hollywood. Her quirky and socially inept qualities that resemble a blend of Kristen Wiig and Zooey Deschanel have helped her gain the popularity she seems to be enjoying on the silver screen. Gerwig has been around for quite awhile, but like most Hollywood success stories, instant fame bleaches out the years of previous turmoil.
Gerwig, who plays the lead in this upcoming "romantic comedy" (although I'm not sure how romantic it will be), has mostly worked in smaller low-budget films but has co-starred in some pretty big productions such as No Strings Attached and Woody Allen's upcoming feature, To Rome With Love, playing Jesse Eisenberg's (The Social Network) girlfriend as well as starring in the soon-to-be-released comedy Damsels in Distress.
With a cast that appears quite comfortable with each other, I think from this trailer Lola Versus could be really promising. This looks fun, it looks entertaining, and dare I say even a little interesting? To be honest, the single line, "Cinderella messes little girls up. We all get obsessed with shoes," almost guarantees I will be seeing this in theaters.
